About Zen Dog Grooming
I established Zen Dog Grooming in 2008. After five years of grooming for other people, in salons and mobile grooming, I found I was not having fun any more. I was always pushed to do more and more dogs to increase the profit margin of the corporations for whom I worked. I was stressed and my dogs could feel it. I stopped grooming for a few months but I missed the dogs. I decided that I would just "do a few dogs at home". Well, my business did very well and before I knew it I was doing just a few dogs in a day but making a living. Since I no longer had to split the income with a corporation I could charge less but still make the same money. More importantly I was enjoying grooming again. My groom dogs were less stressed in a much quieter environment, and I was able to take the time to produce a very nice groom.
I am a native of Denver, graduating from West High School. I have one daughter and two granddaughters.
I started out my adult working life working as an optician for ten years. I switched to finance in 1991 working at Oppenheimer and Janus Funds, obtaining my Series 6, 63 and 7 SEC registrations. After ten years of very long hours I decided it was really important to do something I loved.
I began grooming in 2002, working at Petco and Petsmart and then switched to mobile grooming for Aussie Pet Mobile. It was working there that I really learned the most about the change in stress levels for the dogs I groomed as compared to the salons. I saw that working with one animal, start to finish, really was much easier on them . I groomed a lot of special needs animals and learned about handling them in a different way so as not to exacerbate the conditions that they suffered from.
I also have three years of high volume dog handling experience working at local kennels and shelters.
I am active in rescue work having fostered thirteen dogs for shelters such as Evergreen Animal Protective League, Hope For Animals, Paws and Claws Humane Society out of New Mexico and independently. I also groom for rescue groups and shelters and offer discounted grooming services for newly adopted dogs.
